“Douglas Land Conservancy (DLC) would like to challenge recent comments made by a lawyer representing Buc-ee’s during the Palmer Lake Planning Commission meeting on August 20 regarding the proposed Buc-ee’s development. DLC has never met with, spoken to, or otherwise engaged with Buc-ee’s or any of its representatives on this or any other issue.
“DLC’s only role related to the Greenland Open Space is in partnership with Douglas County, as the holder of the conservation easement. Our involvement is limited to ensuring that the terms of that easement are honored, including in the ongoing condemnation process that began more than three years ago—long before any Buc-ee’s proposal was brought forward. In fact, earlier this year we sent a letter to the Town of Palmer Lake noting that similar eminent domain processes can take years to resolve, underscoring the complexity and length of these matters and we offered to talk with the town if they had questions.
“Any suggestion that DLC has negotiated or reached an agreement with Buc-ee’s, El Paso County, or others to accommodate this project is simply not accurate. Our focus remains on protecting conserved lands in accordance with our mission and the terms of the easements we hold.”
