Please join DLC in celebrating the International Day of Biodiversity, observed on May 22nd. This year’s theme, “Harmony with nature and sustainable development for 2026,” calls upon the global community to re-evaluate our relationship with the natural world.
Despite technological advancements, we remain profoundly dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for essential resources such as water, food, medicines, clothing, fuel, shelter, and energy. This dependence underscores the urgent need to respect, protect, and restore our biological wealth. In December 2022, the international community convened to establish a global plan for transforming our relationship with nature. Among its objectives is the restoration of 20% of degraded ecosystems and the reduction of the introduction or settlement of invasive alien species by 50%.
Biodiversity Decline
Biodiversity is experiencing an unprecedented decline. Approximately 75% of land and 66% of marine ecosystems have been significantly altered by human activities. Furthermore, 1 million animal and plant species are now at risk of extinction. Climate change, pollution, overexploitation, invasive species, and urbanization are the primary drivers of this crisis. The International Day for Biological Diversity serves as a clarion call to action, urging us to transform our lifestyles and forge a renewed connection with nature.
Significance of Biodiversity
Biodiversity holds immense significance for the well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. It encompasses the variety of life forms, ecosystems, and genetic diversity that contribute to the resilience and stability of our environment. Protecting biodiversity is crucial for ensuring the availability of essential resources, maintaining ecological balance, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
Biological diversity encompasses the complete range of life on Earth, encompassing plants, animals, microorganisms, and the ecosystems they inhabit. It hosts variations within species, between species, and among ecosystems. These natural systems serve as the foundation for clean air, fresh water, medicine, food, fuel, clothing, and numerous other essential resources. As our societies expand and evolve, safeguarding this intricate web of life is paramount for long-term survival.
Key ways in which biodiversity supports life include:
- Food and Nutrition: Plants provide over 80 percent of the human diet, while fish supply vital protein to nearly 3 billion people.
- Health and Medicine: Up to 80 percent of individuals residing in rural communities depend on traditional, plant-based remedies.
- Climate Resilience: Diverse ecosystems possess enhanced adaptability to shifting environmental conditions and provide protection against extreme events.
- Disease Prevention: A healthy biodiversity reduces the risk of zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans.
Everyone has a role in safeguarding biodiversity, whether at home, in the workplace, or through advocacy. Here are some steps to consider:
- Support Sustainable Choices: Purchase products that respect ecosystems, avoid overharvesting, and minimize waste.
- Learn and Share: Spread awareness about the connections between biodiversity and health, food, water, and climate.
- Protect Local Habitats: Volunteer with local groups or initiate community projects to restore natural areas and monitor wildlife.
- Reduce Ecological Pressure: Adopt daily habits that limit pollution, minimize single-use plastics, and support clean energy.
DLC actively promotes protecting our biodiversity by permanently preserving extensive land areas for the benefit of local wildlife and plant species that thrive within them.
